The Burma Road is a WWII era road built from Kunming in China to Lashio, and was built for war purposes. Today, the Burma Road starts in Lashio and runs through the old Shan kingdom town of Hsenwi, the largest Kachin town outside of Kachin State, Kutkai, and further is Nampakka and Muse at the border. For a full day of riding, we leave Lashio at 8:30 and ride over the mountains and through many Lahu and Shan communities until we get to Hsenwi for a break. Hsenwi is formerly the home of a Shan Kingdom that controlled that area and north to the China border, and the rice paddy stretches as far as the eye can see in either direction. If we are lucky, we can get some local Shan snacks at a market that moves from city to city, and sometimes is in Hsenwi.
From Hsenwi, down in the valley, we climb for 45 minutes up to Kutkai, with amazing mountain views along the way, with a few great places to take a snapshot. Kutkai is a mostly Kachin city, and the Kachin are largely Christian, and if we go on any day other than Sunday, we can get great Kachin food for lunch. After lunch we can take a short hike up in the hills above Kutkai with amazing views of the mountains we rode through, from a 360 degree vantage point. From Kutkai, we head back toward Lashio, but this time instead of looking up at the towering mountains, we look deep down into the Hsenwi valley.
Our last stop along the way comes after Hsenwi, where we stop at a local bath house fed by the crystal clear odor free hot spring. This is in a village along the highway, and is very local style, nothing impressive, but the water feels great after a long day of riding. Refreshed from the hot bath, we return to Lashio by sunset, and the views don't stop until we arrive back at MAO in Lashio.
